4th edition of the Interdisciplinary PhD in Political Economy

Applications open for the 2025/2026 edition, to be held at Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon

The PhD in Political Economy is inter-institutional and inter-disciplinary in nature, and is unique in its field in Portugal. It gathers a wide group of professors and researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds with an extensive experience in joint research in Political Economy in Portugal (ISCTE-IUL, Faculty of Economics at Coimbra University and ISEG-Lisbon University). This programme aims at promoting the interdisciplinary study of capitalism as a socio-economic and power system in a context of “polycrises”; a variegated system in time and in each moment of its history, according to institutional frameworks and scales. The creation and reproduction of knowledge about the evolution of capitalism in Portugal has also been valued, placing it in the European and global contexts that have shaped and are shaping its trajectories of convergence and divergence.

The following topics are particularly relevant to the PhD in the Political Economy: the relationships between the state, the community and the market in the context of systems of provision of goods and services; the regulatory controversies in relevant areas – from the labour market to the financial system, as well as social security; the challenges posed by integration processes or the nature of crises and the most suitable public policy responses.

The PhD in Political Economy fosters the theoretical and methodological training of students, granting an in-depth empirical knowledge of international and national political economy, and linking domains that are usually examined separately. This study cycle strives for highly demanding training in order to foster students’ capabilities along two main paths: a) career advancement in top administration, both in the public and private sectors; b) the development of relevant research projects that impact the scientific community and may lead to the integration in an academic career.

The PhD programme in Political Economy benefits from a large, highly skilled, plural faculty, with a strong link to research. The PhD programme in Political Economy lasts 8 semesters; its 4th edition will start in the academic year of 2025-2026, at ISCTE-IUL. Applications will open in December 2024, 16.
